Development of an Age- and Gender-specific Model for Strontium Metabolism in Humans

چکیده
This paper presents a development of a new biokinetic model for strontium, which accounts for age and gender differences of metabolism in humans. This model was developed based on the long-term follow-up of the residents living on the banks of the Techa River (Southern Urals, Russia) contaminated with Sr in 1950-1956. The new model uses the structure of ICRP model for strontium but model parameters have been estimated to account for age, gender and population differences in strontium retention and elimination. Estimates of ageand gender-specific model parameters were derived from (a) the results of long-term measurements of Sr-body burden for the Techa River population; (b) experimental studies of calcium and strontium metabolism in humans and (c) non-radiological data regarding bone metabolism (mineral content of the body, bone turnover, etc). As a result, the new model satisfactorily describes data on long-term retention of Sr in residents of the Techa River settlements of all ages and both genders and also data from studies during the period of global fallout in the UK and the USA and experimental data on strontium retention in humans. The new model can be used to calculate dose from Sr for the Techa River residents and also for other populations with similar parameters of skeletal maturation and involution.

Background and Objectives: The purpose of this study was to adopt and calibrate the fracture risk assessment algorithm FRAX® for the Iranian population and to provide the required guidance on how to apply it in clinical practice. Methods: The age-specific ten-year probability of major osteoporotic fractures was calculated in women with an average BMI to determine the fracture probability a...
متن کاملKlotho Protein,A Biomarker for AKI
Klotho is an anti-aging single-pass membrane protein that is mainly produced in the kidney. The level of soluble klotho decreases with age and the klotho gene is associated with an increased risk of age-related diseases, such as diabetes, skin atrophy, chronic kidney disease, ataxia and cancer. The klotho gene is composed of five exons and encodes a membrane glycoprotein located in the plasma ...
متن کاملFuzzy Model of Human’s Performance for Guarding a Territory in an Air Combat
This paper proposes a new method for a three dimensional fuzzy model of pilot's performance for guarding a territory with a short-distance between two aircraft in an air combat task with a gun. A third-order nonlinear point mass vehicle model is considered for an aircraft's flight dynamics. The desired value of the velocity, the flight path and the heading angles are obtained from some derived ...
متن کاملNano-Selenium affects on duodenum, jejunum, ileum and colon characteristics in chicks: An animal model
Selenium has many roles on the functioning of humans and animals. Chicks as animal model can play an important role to distinguish the role/function of selenium. The objective of the present study was to test the effect of variable doses of nano-selenium supplement on the chicken gastrointestinal tract. A total of 180 male Ross chicks were divided into six groups, with three replicates for each...
متن کاملI-43: Identification of SOX3 as an XX MaleSex Reversal Gene in Mice and Jumans
Background: Mammals utilise an XX/XY system of sex determination in which the Y-linked gene SRY (Sexdetermining region Y) exerts a dominant masculinising influence on sexual development. Sex chromosome homology and comparative sequence studies suggest that SRY evolved from the related SOX3 gene on the X chromosome, although there is no direct functional evidence to support this hypothesis. The ...
